Nurses Clinics
This practice is approved by the BSAVA (British Small Animal Veterinary Association) and in September 2006 the practice gained Tier II training status to train veterinary nurses.
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA, a governmental body) dictate certain strict criteria that have to be met to become a registered Training Practice within the NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) system. Once registered, the TPs are inspected by the RCVS twice a year to ensure standards are maintained. Also, each TP must have qualified NVQ Assessors.
Marske Vets Ltd currently has one assessor, who has undergone training and is now qualified to assess student veterinary nurses (SVNs).
Staff, begin training with the Animal Nursing Assistant ANA qualification and then enrol onto the VN/NVQ course to become a qualified Veterinary Nurse VN.

Regular recording of progress and fine tuning of the diet plan, will assist your pet reaching his or her target weight. Feel free to use our Weighing scales in the waiting room at any time.

Dental Checks
Dental hygiene is as important in your pet as it is for our selves. Healthy teeth and gums not only makes our pets more pleasant to live with, it has a positive effect on their health. The nurses can advise you how to care for your pet's teeth through brushing, food supplements, and toys etc and advise you when veterinary help is needed. It is advisable to have your pet's teeth examined every 6 months to check for signs of discomfort, tartar and gingivitis. This will give the nurse or vet the opportunity to check your pets’ teeth and gums, and answer any questions you might have about teeth cleaning and oral hygiene. Dental disease is very common in cats and dogs, to avoid any potential problems, the nurse or vet will then recommend the appropriate treatment.
Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas need to chew for long periods every day to allow their continuously growing cheek teeth to be worn down and to prevent spurs forming, which could cut into their cheeks and tongue, making feeding painful. When a rabbit eats grass or hay, it chews in a sideways movement, wearing the teeth surfaces down evenly. Concentrates in contrast are chewed in an up and down motion, which does not result in sufficient tooth wear. Small pets are at as much risk of dental problems as a cat or dog so bring them for a regular dental check or to have their teeth trimmed.

Flea and worming treatments
Our nurses will administer flea prevention treatment and worming tablets for pets that might object to being handled. They will also advise you how and when to worm them, how to prevent parasites and explain why it is so necessary to follow these regimes.

Behaviour
There are many times when we worry about the way our pet behaves. For example, meeting other animals, Bonfire Night, toilet training, aggression, chewing etc. Our nurses can usually advise you how to deal with these problems and can certainly refer you to the appropriate specialists if the problem persists.

Geriatric Pet Clinics
This clinic is designed for pets over the age of 8years. It will give you he opportunity to discuss changes needed to ensure your older pet continues to live a long and healthy life. Early checks can help detect problems that can occur in later life, and help them to be treated more effectively.
Blood and urine tests are available, during the consultation to monitor organ function and can be a good early indicator of potential or underlying conditions.

Surgery and anaesthesia
We have two, well equipped theatre, comprising of a general and orthopaedic theatre, for neutering, hernia repairs, lumpectomies, and various other surgical procedures, also orthopaedics (bone fracture repairs), and an ophthalmic theatre.

As well as two theatres with have a dedicated dental suite for all routine dentistry. Cryosurgical equipment is also available.
For safe anaesthesia we use up to date drugs and gases, all our systems are fitted for PPV and scavenging equipment for the safety of our patients and staff, we carefully monitor patients using equipment such as pulse oximetry.
Surgical cases are admitted between 9-00 and 9-30am, when you arrive at the practice reception staff will ask you to read a consent form before you see the vet. A few general health questions will be asked and your pet will be weighed. If you have any questions regarding your pets stay with us feel free to ask any member of staff. You will now be asked to sign a consent form before your pet is admitted to hospital. Most animals are admitted without prior premedication/sedation – there is a variety of drugs now available for this purpose and we tailor your pet’s needs taking into account his/her general fitness and temperament and, of course, the type of techniques being undertaken. Some dogs can be quite nervous when left, if you prefer to be with your dog when the sedative is given we will try and comply with your request. We always use pre-operative analgesia to help reduce pain during the recovery period. After surgery we try to have all pets ready to go home the same day as we feel they are happier and recover quicker in their own environment, however in some cases pets may require hospitalisation for example if the surgery is extensive or for special feeding and monitoring.

Repeat Prescriptions
For patients on long term medications we offer repeat prescriptions, and can be obtained by contacting the surgery by phone or email. Prescriptions ordered by 6pm can be collected after 1:00pm the following day, after 6pm they will be available for collection the day after.

For example –
Order placed 4pm Tuesday, would be available to collect after 1pm on Wednesday.
Order placed 6:30pm Tuesday, would be available to collect after 9:00am Thursday.

POM “Prescription Only Medicines” are strictly controlled in the interests of public and animal health and our policy is to review any case on repeats every 3-6 months (unless you are otherwise advised) some medications may require blood testing to monitor drug reactions, these include epileptics, patients with liver or kidney problems and diabetics. Patients on long term medications for any other conditions may be advised that blood testing is necessary to monitor organ function. Please remember that regular check ups are beneficial as far as your pet is concerned as we can monitor the progress of chronic problems and perhaps obtain an early glimpse of a new trouble developing. New drugs are being developed all the time and as long as we see your pet regularly we may be able to change your pet to the new medications if we think these will be more beneficial.
We are quite happy to write a prescription for any medication that your pet needs as long as the pet is regularly checked. Please be aware that if you do go to a pharmacist to have a drug dispensed that you receive the drug that is shown on the prescription and not a human generic equivalent as sometimes the pharmacology of drugs may differ from human to animal. Veterinary prescriptions can also be used at online pharmacies, and if you are using these services, please only use a reputable UK based site as some may not supply the drugs the prescription asks for.

If you require a home visit for routine treatments such as boosters then please give at least a weeks notice for an appointment to be arranged. Visits are usually between 3-6pm. If you require an emergency visit we will endeavour to come to your house as soon as a vet is available. Please contact the surgery as early as possible to arrange this. All fees are available on request.

Off Licence Drugs
In some cases there are particular human drugs that are very useful in practice but not licenced for use in animals, this is because drug companies have to spend a lot of time and research obtaining licences for use and in a lot of cases is not beneficial to themselves. As there is no alternative animal based drug we may recommend using such drugs “off licence” for the treatment of a particular condition, if this case should arise you will be asked to sign a consent form. These drugs are generally widely used within veterinary practice and are known to be safe, however, any known side effects will be discussed with you.
